Getting up the courage to contact a counselor can be a daunting task. I have worked with clients who say things like, “I looked at your profile online for six months (or two years) before I called you.” As someone who has experienced anxiety myself – and concerns about whether or not someone I share myself with will accept of all the parts of me – I can appreciate your search and potential struggle.
These are troubled, even frightening, times for many, in our collective experiences. In any of our individual lives as well, we may encounter a dilemma or question that we just can't resolve. Jungian psychology - looking to the wisdom in the unconscious and the symbolic - is one way to make some meaning out of suffering and to move forward with purpose.
Depth work includes examining our shadow (unconscious/unknown elements) through our relationships and our dreams, creative work, and experiences. The idea that we can seek to individuate - to become the unique human only we can be, by a good relationship with our own psyche - is a challenging but powerful way to live our lives. Depth work can also help us make some sense of the collective movements and energies in the world, however dark and difficult.
" . . . your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Without, everything seems discordant; only within does it coalesce into unity. Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside awakes.”
